The Gopalpur gang rape incident has ignited a wave of nationwide outrage as authorities continue their investigation into the harrowing crime. Allegations suggest that a group of 10 individuals, including four minors, were involved in the assault of a college student on June 15. The perpetrators also extorted money from the victim and her companion, according to law enforcement officials.
Pramod Nayak, the alleged ringleader and a B Tech dropout, was reportedly in Odisha on leave from his job at an electronics factory near Bengaluru. This isn't Nayak's first encounter with the law; he was previously released on bail in a separate attempt to murder case. The police are actively gathering evidence, including DNA samples from the accused.
The Crime Against Women and Children Wing of the CID Crime Branch is spearheading the investigation, with officers collecting crucial evidence from the scene, such as sand samples and cigarette stubs. The case has prompted authorities to request the Juvenile Justice Board to try the involved minors as adults. This tragedy serves as a stark reminder of the ongoing fight against sexual violence in India.
