Actor Turned Saboteur: The Viktor Mosienko Case

In a significant verdict from Moscow's military court, Russian actor Viktor Mosienko has been sentenced to 17 years in prison. The court found him guilty of attempting to destroy a railway on behalf of a pro-Ukraine paramilitary group, aiming to disrupt Moscow's ongoing war efforts.

Mosienko, a film and theatre actor, conceded his guilt, expressing remorse in court. He cited his intentions to help Ukrainian children as motivation. The case underscores the increased incidence of terrorism prosecutions in Russia, with 2024 witnessing a 40% rise over the previous year, highlighted by 429 cases reaching the courts.

Mosienko's arrest unfolded in the Belgorod region, close to Ukraine, where he attempted to plant an improvised explosive device under a railway bridge. Disguised as a railway worker, he carried explosives concealed in candy boxes. His involvement with the banned Freedom for Russia Legion, opposing President Putin and supporting Ukraine, also surfaced during investigations.
