In a dramatic turn of events at the West Bengal Assembly, Speaker Biman Banerjee expunged the speeches of two BJP MLAs who walked out of the chamber following a heated discussion on the West Bengal Sales Tax (Settlement of Disputes) (Amendment) Bill, 2025.
The legislation was passed by voice vote in the absence of opposition members, with Minister of State for Finance Chandrima Bhattacharya arguing it would benefit both the tax assessee and the state. BJP members protested, claiming insufficient time was given to study the bill.
Banerjee cited assembly rules in expunging the speeches, calling the walkout 'indecent and unfortunate.' The incident has highlighted the ongoing tensions between the ruling party and the opposition in West Bengal's legislative process.
