In a pivotal phone call, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz urged Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to exercise moderation in the ongoing campaign against Iran. While Germany supports Israel's efforts against Iran's nuclear infrastructure, Merz emphasized the critical importance of pursuing diplomatic channels to resolve the conflict.
Germany is set to host crucial nuclear talks in Geneva with European partners and the Iranian foreign minister. The discussions aim to secure assurances from Iran regarding the peaceful nature of its nuclear program. Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi has confirmed his participation in the talks alongside his counterparts from Germany, Britain, and France.
Merz, in a separate conversation with Qatar's Emir, stressed the significance of preventing regional escalation. Meanwhile, Germany continues to urge Israel to comply with international law in its actions against Hamas in Gaza, as the humanitarian crisis deepens.
