Naini Central Jail has come under scrutiny after Rs 1,100 was discovered on Ali Ahmad, an inmate and son of the slain gangster-politician Atiq Ahmad. Officials responded by suspending Deputy Jailer Shanti Devi and Warden Sanjay Dwivedi over this breach of prison regulations.
During a recent inspection led by DIG (Jails) Rakesh Srivastava, the cash was unearthed, sparking an investigation. Senior Superintendent Rang Bahadur reported that the money was intended for canteen purchases but had not been converted into the required coupons, as prison rules dictate.
This incident adds to the high-profile background of Ali Ahmad, reflecting ongoing issues within prison management. Atiq Ahmad, his father, was a former MP with a notorious record involving over 100 criminal cases, including murder charges. The jail now faces an internal review to prevent further lapses.
