PDP President Mehbooba Mufti has made a public appeal to the Indian Army, urging them to uphold the fundamental rights and dignity of the people in Jammu and Kashmir. This follows disturbing allegations that soldiers are forcing young residents in the Kulgam district to work as 'bonded laborers'.
Mehbooba, who served as the last chief minister of the former state of Jammu and Kashmir, directed her appeal to the Corps Commander of the Army's Srinagar-based XV Corps, commonly known as the Chinar Corps, seeking their immediate attention to the matter. However, no comment has yet been received from Army officials.
The region in question, Manzgam, is a significant location due to the shrine of Baba Qayaam Din and the temple of Ragniya Devi, highlighting its religious importance. Since May 2025, the Army has begun establishing operations in this area, raising legitimate concerns and allegations that young locals are being compelled to work at these camps and private vehicles are being requisitioned without consent.
