Ukraine's Diplomatic and Aid Outreach: Countering Russia's Influence in Africa
Ukraine has opened new embassies in Africa, including Mauritania, as part of its strategy to counter Russia's influence. Kyiv sends food aid to Malian refugees and offers military training to Mauritanian soldiers. Despite its limited reach compared to Russia, Ukraine seeks to persuade African nations of its cause.

Amid the geopolitical tussle between Ukraine and Russia, Mauritania has emerged as an unexpected focal point for Kyiv's expanding influence in Africa. Situated on Africa's dry western tip, this West African nation has welcomed Ukraine's efforts to counter Russia's deep-rooted ties on the continent.
Ukraine's strategy involves opening new diplomatic missions, delivering significant food aid, and offering military training programs. Kyiv's new embassy in Nouakchott, one of eight opened in Africa since Russia's invasion in 2022, administers aid deliveries to Malian refugees and seeks to solidify military collaboration in the region.
The challenge, however, remains steep. With Russia's entrenched commercial and military presence across Africa, Ukraine aims to position itself as a key player, especially in the food security domain. Despite setbacks, Ukraine's initiatives aim to draw African nations towards its cause by highlighting shared histories of colonialism and independence.
