In a significant development, a PIL has been filed before the Calcutta High Court seeking a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) probe into the alleged gang rape of a law student at South Kolkata Law College. The incident involves an alumnus and two classmates as accused.
The petitioner contends that Manojit Mishra, named as the prime suspect, has strong ties with the ruling state party, possibly affecting the fairness of the investigation handled by Kolkata Police. Thus, a CBI intervention is sought for an unbiased inquiry.
In addition to demanding monetary compensation for the victim and her family, the PIL calls for the appointment of female civic volunteers in educational institutions across West Bengal to bolster the safety of female students. The court is expected to hear multiple petitions on this matter soon.
