Former Maharashtra home minister Anil Deshmukh has raised concerns over the prolonged delay in implementing the proposed Shakti Act, legislation intended to impose harsher penalties for heinous crimes against women and children.
The Shakti Criminal Laws (Maharashtra Amendment) Bill, 2020, which was passed by both houses of the Maharashtra legislature during the tenure of the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) government, remains stalled, pending the formation of a necessary committee.
Deshmukh critiques the Maharashtra government for not adhering to the central request made a year ago to establish a committee. He emphasizes the sensitivity of the issue and urges the current administration to expedite the report submission process to the Union government, ensuring swift implementation of the Shakti Act.
