A comprehensive verification exercise by the Women and Child Development Department has uncovered a significant number of ineligible beneficiaries in the Delhi government's Women's Pension Scheme. Officials announced on Monday that over 60,000 names have been removed following the review undertaken to ensure only deserving women receive the monthly financial aid of Rs 2,500.
The verification effort, initiated last November, revealed numerous cases of improper claims, including women who have remarried, employed women with steady income, and others who have changed addresses. As a direct result, the list of beneficiaries has undergone a significant revision.
With the scheme impacting roughly 3.65 lakh women currently, officials reiterated their commitment to preserving the integrity of this welfare measure by eliminating fraudulent claims. Introduced in 2007, the scheme has expanded its benefits and eligibility criteria over the years, with nearly Rs 1,140 crore spent annually by the government to assist economically disadvantaged widows and separated women in Delhi.
