The Jharkhand BJP has announced plans for demonstrations across district headquarters on Tuesday evening in response to alleged police excesses against tribals during the 'Hul Diwas' celebrations in Sahebganj.
On Monday, the police reportedly fired tear gas and used batons to disperse individuals protesting the dismantling of an event stage, being carried out by district authorities ahead of the official 'Hul Diwas' (Rebellion Day) commemoration in Bhognadih.
Bhognadih is historically significant as the birthplace of tribal leaders Sido and Kanhu Murmu, who spearheaded the Santhal rebellion against British colonial forces and local landlords in 1855-56. Observed annually on June 30, 'Hul Diwas' marks their contribution to the tribal uprising.
"We will burn the effigy of the Jharkhand government in all district headquarters at 4 pm on Tuesday to protest against the police action on our tribal community in Bhognadih on 'Hul Diwas'," stated Jharkhand BJP general secretary and Rajya Sabha MP Aditya Sahu.
The 'Adivasi Bachao Morcha' and 'Kendriya Sarna Sthal Siram Toli Bachao Morcha' have also announced that their leaders will join the demonstration at Ranchi's Albert Ekka Chowk on Tuesday evening.
