Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar has emphasized the need for eligible citizens to register as voters in their constituency of ordinary residence, rather than where they own property. His comments coincide with a special intensive review of the voters list underway in Bihar, which is set to go to polls later this year.
The review's chief goal is to identify individuals who unwittingly or deliberately possess multiple voter cards for different constituencies. "Under the Representation of the People Act, you can only vote in the assembly constituency where you are an ordinary resident," Kumar highlighted during his address to booth-level officers.
This extensive review, occurring for the first time in 22 years, aligns with the Election Commission's plan to conduct similar audits in six states, starting with Bihar. The focus is on eliminating foreign illegal migrants and ensuring each registered voter is valid and singular, a task that's crucial ahead of the Bihar elections.
