In a significant announcement, Union Home Minister Amit Shah heralded the enactment of three groundbreaking criminal laws as the most substantial reform in post-independence India. He emphasized that the Narendra Modi administration crafted these laws to ensure that citizens' rights are fully protected while ensuring criminals face justice.
Speaking at an event marking the one-year anniversary of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita, and Bharatiya Sakshya Adhiniyam, Shah stressed these laws will vastly improve the nation's criminal justice system. He assured citizens they could achieve Supreme Court justice within three years of filing an FIR.
Replacing colonial-era legislation, the new laws commenced in July 2024, modernizing justice with innovations like Zero FIR and online police complaints. Shah affirmed the Modi government prioritized justice delivery, contrasting it with the punitive focus of outdated laws.
