As many as 427 Mumbai police personnel have died in the last three years with 25 of them committing suicide, Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis on Wednesday told the legislative council. Fadnavis, who holds the home portfolio, gave the information in a written reply.

''From 2022 to June 2025, 427 Mumbai police personnel died, of which 25 were suicides,'' the CM stated. Yogesh Kadam, Minister of State for Home, said in his oral reply that 75 police personnel posted in Mumbai died due to ''cardiac arrest'' during this period, while six died of cancer.

Of suicides, some were due to family reasons, three suicides were due to addiction, while one police personnel who ended his life was suffering from depression, he informed. Police welfare is the top priority of the government and the home department is working with some NGOs to help police personnel in this regard, Kadam said, adding there are gyms in some police stations.

Leader of opposition Ambadas Danve said often police personnel live far away from their place of work, and do not get even basic facilities. Fadnavis noted that when Datta Padsalgikar was Mumbai police commissioner, the eight-hour work concept was introduced in the city police department.
