In a moment of historic diplomacy and recognition, Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi was conferred with Ghana’s highest national civilian honour — Officer of the Order of the Star of Ghana — by His Excellency John Dramani Mahama, President of the Republic of Ghana. The ceremonial conferral took place in the presidential palace in Accra during Prime Minister Modi’s ongoing official State Visit to Ghana, the first by an Indian head of government in over four decades.

Recognition of Statesmanship and Global Impact

The honour was awarded to Prime Minister Modi in recognition of his exceptional statesmanship, transformational leadership in India, and influential role on the global stage. It also acknowledged his contribution to strengthening India-Africa relations, promoting South-South cooperation, and championing the Global South in multilateral fora.

The Order of the Star of Ghana is the country’s most prestigious national award, traditionally bestowed on eminent personalities whose contributions have significantly impacted the international community and fostered stronger ties with Ghana.

President Mahama, in his address, described Prime Minister Modi as a "visionary global leader" who has "redefined India’s engagement with Africa" and upheld democratic values, digital transformation, and inclusive growth.

A Dedication to India and Shared Histories

Accepting the honour with humility, Prime Minister Modi stated,

“I accept this honour not for myself, but on behalf of the 1.4 billion people of India. I dedicate this award to the aspirations of India’s youth, the resilience of its citizens, and the rich cultural and spiritual traditions that define our nation.”

He also emphasized the centuries-old historical and civilizational ties between India and Ghana — dating back to anti-colonial solidarity, economic cooperation in the post-independence era, and deep-rooted cultural bonds fostered by the Indian diaspora in Ghana.

Prime Minister Modi recalled India’s support for Ghana’s development journey, particularly in capacity-building, health, education, digital technology, and renewable energy. He reaffirmed India’s commitment to partnerships based on mutual respect, shared prosperity, and democratic values.

Strengthening Bilateral Ties

Prime Minister Modi expressed confidence that his visit would open a new chapter in India-Ghana relations, marked by greater cooperation in areas such as:

  • Digital public infrastructure and fintech solutions

  • Healthcare and pharmaceuticals

  • Agricultural productivity and food security

  • Renewable energy and climate action

  • Skills development and youth exchange

He also highlighted the role of Indian enterprises and diaspora communities in Ghana’s economic landscape, noting that India is among the top investors in Ghana and continues to support flagship development projects across sectors.

A Convergence of Shared Democratic Values

The visit and honour symbolized the convergence of two vibrant democracies committed to inclusive development and global peace. Prime Minister Modi and President Mahama emphasized the importance of multilateralism, reforming global governance, and amplifying the voice of the Global South.

The two leaders committed to advancing cooperation within the frameworks of:

  • India-Africa Forum Summit (IAFS)

  • South-South Cooperation

  • United Nations and G-20 platforms

  • The Commonwealth and Non-Aligned Movement

Cultural Diplomacy and Youth Aspirations

During his address, PM Modi made special mention of Ghana’s youth potential, rich musical and literary traditions, and vibrant democratic spirit. He proposed greater cultural exchange initiatives, tech-based learning programs, and collaboration in creative industries.

He concluded his remarks by stating:

“This award binds me and India even more closely to the dreams of the people of Ghana. It is a responsibility — to build a future rooted in friendship, equality, and shared progress.”

A Milestone in India-Africa Engagement

The honour adds to the growing list of global accolades conferred on Prime Minister Modi for his leadership. It also signals Africa’s recognition of India’s rising global profile and New Delhi’s deepening strategic engagement across the continent.

This visit is seen as a turning point in India’s Africa policy, prioritizing mutual growth, people-to-people ties, and local empowerment. As PM Modi continues his multi-nation African tour, this milestone in Ghana stands out as a symbol of enduring trust, goodwill, and ambition for a shared future.
