Carlos Ruiz Takes Helm as UN Special Representative to Haiti

Carlos Ruiz, a seasoned Mexican diplomat, has been appointed by the UN Secretary-General as the new special representative to Haiti, the United Nations announced. Ruiz will succeed Ecuador's Maria Isabel Salvador, who led the UN's BINUH office in Haiti.

Ruiz's previous experience includes his role as the special representative for Colombia, which began in 2019. During his tenure, he played a pivotal role in monitoring the implementation of Colombia's peace agreement and participating in recent peace talks between the government and armed guerrilla factions.

His appointment comes at a critical time for Haiti as the nation grapples with ongoing challenges. Ruiz's expertise and background in conflict resolution will be instrumental in his new role, where he is expected to provide guidance and support to BINUH's efforts in fostering stability in the Caribbean region.
