UP: Manorama river revival initiative launched in Gonda

Launching an initiative to rejuvenate the Manorama river in Gonda, the district administration has begun desilting, garbage removal and tree plantation along its banks.

Acting on the Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath's instructions, District Magistrate Neha Sharma initiated efforts to rejuvenate the river through public participation, the Uttar Pradesh government said in a statement.

''Manorama is not just a river, it is our cultural heritage, its revival will be a matter of pride for our people,'' Sharma said.

In recent years, the Manorama river has ''nearly vanished'' and its flow has been reduced by silt, encroachment and dried-up sources, and its revival will be a major milestone in water conservation and re-establishing Gonda's ecological and cultural identity, the government said.

While inspecting the entire stretch of the river from its origin at Manorama Sarovar in Gonda district, the DM issued detailed instructions to various departments. As part of the initiative, the forest department has been tasked to plant trees along the banks of Manorama, focusing on native species like peepal, neem, and pakad. Simultaneously, desilting and cleaning operations have been launched.

The river's stretch from the Gonda-Balrampur road to Tadilal village will be cleared and its water stream will be rerouted.

A coordinated, multi-departmental approach has been adopted, and respective departments have been assigned their duties, the statement added. The MGNREGA cell is tasked with deploying labourers, while the forest department will oversee afforestation. The irrigation department has been assigned the technical evaluation of the river's structure and flow, the statement added.
