The move to remove Justice Yashwant Varma commenced on Monday with parliamentarians submitting the necessary notices to both houses of Parliament. The procedure has captured attention, with significant support from both opposition and ruling party members. Lok Sabha Leader Rahul Gandhi's participation was notable in this bipartisan endeavor.
Justice Varma faces allegations following the discovery of burnt currency notes at his official residence on March 14, leading to his repatriation to the Allahabad High Court. The Chairman of the Rajya Sabha, Jagdeep Dhankhar, confirmed that the required number of signatures to start the removal proceedings has been obtained, calling for a statutory committee to investigate the charges.
A committee, including senior justices and a jurist, will assess the evidence and allegations against Justice Varma. Expected to deliver a report in three months, the inquiry's findings could significantly impact the judge's position. Despite Justice Varma's denial of any misconduct, a previous inquiry suggested otherwise, prompting decisive legislative actions.
