The Supreme Court of India has welcomed a significant move, refusing to stay a QR code directive for eateries along the kanwar yatra route in Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand. The order mandates hotel and dhaba owners to display a QR code, providing scanned details of the establishment, and has been largely supported.
Justices M M Sundresh and N Kotiswar Singh refrained from delving into specific issues regarding the display of names, emphasizing the non-discriminatory nature of the decision. Raghuveer Singh, a long-time participant in the religious festival, applauded the ruling, highlighting its potential to eliminate community-based bias.
Muslim and Hindu operators along the route have supported the order. Despite criticisms citing possible religious profiling, officials and business owners stress that the QR code requirement is uniformly applied to ensure transparency and compliance. This ruling reflects a broader respect for religious sentiments and consumer rights.
