A 22-year-old college student named Arun C has allegedly died by suicide, prompting law enforcement to file a case against three classmates on abetment charges, officials stated on Wednesday.
Hailing from Hassan, Arun was discovered hanging in his home on July 11. He decided to return home for a break after completing his eighth-semester exams. At the time, his parents, who are daily-wage laborers, were at work. A death note found at the scene did not attribute blame to any individual. Initially filed as an ''unnatural death'', the case took a different turn when Arun's parents filed a complaint alleging harassment by classmates via a college WhatsApp group, which they believe led to their son's death.
According to the FIR, the harassment allegedly involved sending derogatory messages about Arun in the class group, an account corroborated by two of his friends. Arun also reportedly recorded a distress video shared in the group before his death. Subsequently, police have charged the accused under Sections 108 and 3(5) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, with further investigations planned, including questioning Arun's acquaintances and college authorities to uncover the events leading to this tragic outcome.
