In a landmark judgment, a CBI court in Mohali sentenced former Punjab Police officer Paramjit Singh to 10 years of rigorous imprisonment for a staged 1993 encounter that resulted in the deaths of two constables. The case has drawn significant attention as Singh was accused alongside other officers, though he alone was convicted.

The court, presided over by special CBI Judge Baljinder Singh Sra, also imposed a fine of Rs 50,000 on 67-year-old Singh, who retired as a superintendent of police. The trial revealed that the encounter was fabricated, as determined by a CBI probe conducted under Supreme Court directives.

Despite the acquittal of three other accused officers, the court acknowledged the prolonged struggle for justice by the families of the deceased constables. It called for compensation for the families, highlighting the financial and emotional burden they endured over the years.
