A court in Nashik, Maharashtra, has granted bail to Congress leader Rahul Gandhi in a defamation case involving remarks about V D Savarkar, a prominent Hindutva ideologue. The case was filed following comments made by Gandhi during the Bharat Jodo Yatra in 2022.

Gandhi appeared via video link before additional chief judicial magistrate R C Narwadia and entered a plea of 'not guilty.' The case was lodged by Nashik resident Devendra Bhutada, who alleged Gandhi's statements had defamed Savarkar's reputation. Consequently, Gandhi's lawyers sought bail, which the court accepted, setting the bond at Rs 15,000.

The complaint claimed Gandhi's speeches during his Yatra and press conferences had tarnished the reputation of Savarkar, who was a respected figure in the pre-independence era. Additionally, Gandhi is facing another defamation case in Pune, filed by Savarkar's grandnephew concerning similar statements.
