A special session of the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) was abruptly adjourned within 10 minutes on Thursday as tumult erupted, led by AAP councillors. The session devolved into disorder after Mayor Raja Iqbal Singh announced that elections for chairperson and vice-chairperson positions of special committees will occur in early August.
Despite valid nominations being confirmed, tensions escalated when AAP councillors disrupted proceedings, protesting a reduction in the Scheduled Caste (SC) Committee's membership from 35 to 21. They called for the restoration of its original strength to ensure adequate Dalit representation.
Accusations flew as both political sides blamed each other. Mayor Singh accused the AAP of choosing chaos over discussion, while the Leader of Opposition, Ankush Narang, condemned the BJP for allegedly undermining Dalit rights for political gain.
