The Kerala High Court has asked the state government to clarify the legal and constitutional issues that have led to the postponement of a proposed law to ban black magic and sorcery. The demand came after the state revealed that the legislation remains a topic of ongoing discussion.
According to the government, the cabinet withdrew the proposed bill due to intricate legal complexities, despite the existence of various statutes that already address criminal acts masquerading as supernatural practices. The bench has requested detailed prosecution records from the last five years involving these acts.
The court also directed the state to determine a timeline for a decision on the bill. Initiated by a PIL, the case highlights public concern over harmful rituals, echoing laws in Maharashtra and Karnataka. The matter is set for further hearing on August 5.
