Eugene Shvidler Loses Supreme Court Bid Against UK Sanctions

  • United Kingdom

Billionaire oil tycoon Eugene Shvidler has lost his latest bid to overturn UK sanctions linked to Russia's invasion of Ukraine at the Supreme Court. Implicated due to his association with Roman Abramovich, the sanctions have severely impacted his business and personal life, according to Shvidler.

Despite Shvidler's argument that the decision was arbitrary and selectively applied, the UK's Foreign Office contended that targeting him aligns with Britain's foreign policy goals. Since March 2022, over 1,700 entities or individuals have been sanctioned by the UK.

The Supreme Court upheld the sanctions by a four-to-one majority, maintaining the UK's consistent defense of its Russian sanctions in court. Shvidler argued that the sanctions unjustly harmed him, yet the court deemed them a legitimate balance between individual rights and policy aims.
