In a contentious development, a delegation from the Congress-led UDF alliance in Kerala visited Durg Central Jail, Chhattisgarh, to meet two Catholic nuns accused of human trafficking and forced religious conversion. The nuns, Preethi Merry and Vandana Francis, along with Sukaman Mandavi, were apprehended on July 25 at Durg railway station following a complaint lodged by a local Bajrang Dal member.
The UDF's entry into the jail was delayed as a BJP delegation was already meeting the nuns. Premchandran, a leader from the delegation, claimed outside the jail that the nuns are innocent, explaining that the visit was only permitted after intervention from former Chief Minister Bhupesh Baghel.
The situation has escalated into a political fracas with accusations from senior Congress leader Baghel that the BJP is targeting religious minorities to polarize voter sentiment. Meanwhile, Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai maintained that the situation concerned the safety of women being politicized.
