In a significant development, former Maharashtra Home Minister and NCP (SP) leader Anil Deshmukh has voiced concerns over the potential misuse of the newly passed Maharashtra Special Public Security Bill, 2024. The state legislature approved this bill, which aims to curb activities of Left-wing extremist groups, particularly urban Naxalism.
Despite claims from the Mahayuti government that the bill contains adequate safeguards, Deshmukh fears it might be weaponized against government critics and political opponents. He drew parallels to alleged abuses by central agencies, such as the Enforcement Directorate, which have faced scrutiny from the Supreme Court.
In a bid to mobilize support and awareness, NCP (SP) president Sharad Pawar is set to commence a yatra in Nagpur. Scheduled for August 9, the event will highlight Pawar's role in implementing the Mandal Commission's OBC recommendations in Maharashtra.
