A Kargil war veteran's family in Pune faced an unsettling situation when about 80 individuals allegedly stormed their residence, demanding proof of Indian citizenship. This group, reportedly linked to a Hindutva outfit, accused the family of being Bangladeshis.
The incident occurred in the Chandannagar area around midnight last Saturday. Irshad Shaikh recounted how the intruders dismissed the family's Aadhaar cards, and despite the family's longstanding military service, hurled abusive accusations. The family's pleas for reasonable investigation were ignored.
Adding to the ordeal, two plainclothes policemen stood by idly, exacerbating the distress. Despite subsequent assurances from law enforcement, no substantial steps have been taken. Activist Rahul Dambale is pressing for action, and concerns about the handling of the situation are mounting.
