The United States has successfully repatriated an American child separated from their family in a northeastern Syrian camp that houses individuals with alleged connections to ISIS. This move underscores ongoing efforts to resolve the humanitarian crisis in the region.
Current estimates suggest that al-Hol Camp shelters approximately 30,000 people from 70 countries, predominantly families and supporters of ISIS fighters. Human rights organizations have long highlighted the dire living conditions within the camp. The US-backed Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), crucial allies in the Syrian struggle against ISIS, have administered the camp for years.
The US State Department, while providing limited information on the repatriation process, emphasized the necessity for countries to reclaim and assess their nationals from such camps. Recent political developments in Syria, including an agreement between Damascus and the SDF, aim to facilitate the repatriation process and consolidate governance.
