Unveiling UAPA: Only Two Cases Quashed in Five Years

Only two cases filed under the stringent anti-terror law, the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA), were quashed by courts across India between 2018 and 2022, Parliament was informed on Wednesday.
In a written reply to a question in the Rajya Sabha, Minister of State for Home Affairs Nityanand Rai presented data from the latest National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) report on 'Crime in India'. The report highlighted that 6,503 individuals faced charges under the UAPA during this period, with 252 convictions.
The nationwide data, as presented by the minister, showed the quashing of two cases in Kerala in 2022. Throughout these years, law enforcement agencies arrested a total of 8,947 individuals, with the highest numbers recorded in Jammu and Kashmir and Uttar Pradesh.
