The Supreme Court on Wednesday upheld the Bombay High Court's decision to register an FIR in the Somnath Suryavanshi custodial death case. Prakash Ambedkar, VBA president, and a noted Dalit leader, announced this.
Suryavanshi, a 35-year-old law student, died in judicial custody on December 15, 2024, at Parbhani after being arrested due to violent protests. Activists claimed he was tortured in police custody, prompting his mother to seek action against police officers through the High Court.
The Supreme Court's order followed the High Court's demand for an FIR by July 4, which remains unfiled. Ambedkar noted potential contempt of court proceedings and criticized J J Hospital doctors for issuing opinions without full fact consideration and a court order.
