A recent report by a British parliamentary panel has raised alarms over the increased instances of transnational repression on UK soil. The Joint Committee on Human Rights (JCHR) identified 12 countries, including India, allegedly involved in silencing and intimidating individuals and groups within the UK.
The report cites a disturbing rise in state-threat investigations by MI5, growing by 48% since last year. It accused several countries of leveraging fear to stifle free expression and movement. Notably, the misuse of Interpol mechanisms has been highlighted, with allegations against countries like China, Russia, and Turkey as prolific offenders.
JCHR Chair Lord David Alton stressed the need for the UK to make this a diplomatic priority. The Home Office affirmed its commitment to counteract foreign coercion. Meanwhile, Interpol reiterated its dedication to upholding human rights in its operations.
