Austria's ambassador to the European Union, Thomas Oberreiter, has stepped down following allegations linking him to a controversial blog. The Austrian foreign ministry confirmed his resignation on Wednesday, citing personal reasons after the ambassador faced reports of maintaining a sexually explicit online presence.
Foreign Minister Beate Meinl-Reisinger took swift action once she was alerted to the allegations over the weekend. After a review, Oberreiter requested to resign on Monday, which the minister accepted, according to the ministry's official statement.
The ministry has withheld specific details due to data protection policies and neither confirmed nor denied the claims. Austrian newspapers, including Der Standard, allege Oberreiter authored the blog blending fantasy with real-life images since 2015—a claim he contests.
