Syrian Foreign Minister Visits Moscow: A New Chapter in Russia-Syria Relations?

Syria's Foreign Minister Asaad al-Shibani will travel to Moscow for discussions with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, marking the first high-level visit since the new government came to power in Damascus. The meetings will focus on strengthening bilateral ties and addressing international and regional concerns.

Historically, Russia played a pivotal role in Syria's civil war, supporting former President Bashar Assad. However, during the latest insurgent offensive, Russia remained on the sidelines as Assad was ousted and eventually sought refuge in Russia.

The new Syrian interim government, led by Ahmad al-Sharaa, is taking a pragmatic line with Moscow, welcoming Russian support. Russia continues its presence on the Syrian coast and has provided support in various forms, including oil shipments, while backing Syria against Israeli military actions.
