Late in April 2022, Dmytro Shabanov, a security assistant for the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE) in eastern Ukraine, was taken from his home. His arrest was part of a wider crackdown by pro-Russian forces in the Luhansk region, following Moscow's invasion.

Alongside two other OSCE workers, Maksym Petrov and Vadym Golda, Shabanov remains imprisoned under accusations of treason and espionage by Russian-controlled courts, despite carrying documents that should have granted them immunity. The OSCE and human rights groups are calling for their immediate release amidst concerns of torture and deteriorating health conditions.

The detentions have sparked international outrage and diplomatic efforts to secure the workers' release continue. However, these men may be seen as bargaining chips by Moscow, as questions surrounding their future persist while tensions between the East and West remain high.
