The Supreme Court is set to address the critical distinction of whether Rohingyas residing in India qualify as refugees or illegal entrants. This classification will significantly impact their access to protections, rights, and privileges within the country.
A bench comprising Justices Surya Kant, Dipankar Datta, and N Kotiswar Singh is tasked with addressing these complex issues, arising from multiple pleas concerning the status and treatment of Rohingyas. A decision on whether their deportation by the Centre and states is justified is of particular importance.
Additional concerns include whether Rohingyas in refugee camps are receiving basic amenities such as drinking water, sanitation, and education. The court has grouped related matters and will proceed with separate hearings scheduled for consecutive Wednesdays to establish guiding principles on these matters.
