The Supreme Court announced on Thursday that it will first address whether it will entertain petitions challenging its 2022 decision to uphold the Enforcement Directorate's (ED) powers under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA). The decision involves arguments on the foundational validity of the review petitions themselves.

A bench, comprising Justices Surya Kant, Ujjal Bhuyan, and N Kotiswar Singh, recognized the ED's presentation of three primary issues focused on the review petitions' maintainability. Conversely, the petitioners have put forth 13 crucial questions for the court's consideration.

The case is scheduled for a hearing on August 6, and will proceed based on its initial determination of the petitions' validity. The 2022 ruling had previously reinforced the ED's capacities, framing money laundering as a significant global threat, and is viewed critically by opposition parties.
