Sen. Markey's Proposal: A Lifeline for TikTok?
Senator Ed Markey proposes new national security measures to keep TikTok operational in the U.S., amidst legislative pressure for ByteDance to divest. His plan would replace divestment with transparency requirements and data access limitations to protect U.S. user information.

Democratic Senator Ed Markey unveiled a proposal on Thursday aimed at establishing new national security safeguards that could secure TikTok's place in the United States market. This move comes as the popular app, used by 170 million Americans, faces an uncertain future.
Last year, legislation passed Congress that required China's ByteDance to divest TikTok by January 19 or face a ban. However, President Donald Trump has since directed the Justice Department not to enforce this law.
Markey's proposal seeks to remove the divestment requirement. Instead, it would mandate that TikTok implement transparency requirements concerning content and restrict foreign access to American users' data, potentially offering a solution that balances security concerns with continued app availability.
