In a significant move to strengthen its military capabilities, Poland has inked a second major deal with South Korean firm Hyundai Rotem for the delivery of battle tanks. This $6.5 billion contract underscores Poland's commitment to bolstering defense amid escalating tensions in Eastern Europe.
The latest agreement, which entails local manufacturing of 61 tanks in southern Poland, builds on Poland's strategy to expand its defense industry. Defense Minister Wladyslaw Kosiniak-Kamysz emphasized the importance of technology transfer and local production as key drivers of the national economy, as announced during a YouTube broadcast.
Poland's initiative to enhance its military might is a part of its broader defense strategy, with plans for the first tank deliveries set for next year and domestic production slated for 2028-2030. The deal also includes ancillary support vehicles and a comprehensive training, service, and repair package.
