Authorities in Banaskantha, Gujarat, have commenced an investigation into the death of an 18-year-old girl, occurring just two days before her live-in partner's habeas corpus petition was to be heard by the High Court.

The inquiry was mandated after Haresh Chaudhary, the girl's live-in partner, lodged a complaint last month alleging foul play by her family, who reportedly opposed their relationship. Superintendent Akshayraj Makwana confirmed the probe was ordered, with Assistant Superintendent of the Danta division tasked with leading the investigation.

According to Chaudhary, the girl's family was intent on marrying her off to another person. He claimed police involvement in their apprehension in Rajasthan, where she was handed over to her uncle while he faced arrest on a separate charge. Chaudhary's petition to the Gujarat High Court became moot upon the revelation of her death, prompting calls for legal action against her relatives and alleged complicit officers.
