USDOT Cancels Funding for Controversial MAGLEV Project
The U.S. Transportation Department has withdrawn $26 million in funding for the Washington-Baltimore high-speed rail project, citing long-standing planning issues, community opposition, and cost overruns. The MAGLEV project had been on hold since 2021 due to lack of progress and a stalled environmental review.

The United States Department of Transportation (USDOT) has pulled $26 million in grants for the Washington-Baltimore high-speed rail project. The decision comes after years of setbacks, including inefficient planning, significant public resistance, and excessive budget overruns.
The proposed $20 billion Baltimore-Washington Superconducting Magnetic Levitation, or MAGLEV, project has faced numerous challenges. These included navigating through substantial community opposition and a growing list of planning inadequacies.
Since an environmental review of the project was put on hold in 2021, there has been little progress, prompting USDOT to officially rescind the funding. The move signals a critical blow to this long-debated infrastructure project.
