The Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC) in Meghalaya has issued a call to action, urging traditional village heads to remain vigilant and report any illegal cross-border movements. This move comes in response to the Assam government's stringent crackdown on illegal settlers, an official confirmed on Friday.
Amid media reports of Assam's efforts, the KHADC expressed concerns about potential illegal entries into villages under its jurisdiction, particularly those along the border with Assam. A circular released by the KHADC emphasized the importance of instructing all 'Hima' to ensure that their 'Dorbar Shnong' and 'Dorbar Raid' remain alert and prevent unauthorized persons from entering or settling in these border areas.
In parallel, the Garo Hills Autonomous District Council (GHADC) has intensified its actions against illegal settlements, demolishing six houses that were illegally constructed on council land near the Assam-Meghalaya border on July 29. Both councils are emphasizing the critical need for community vigilance to safeguard tribal land rights in the face of increasing migration pressures in these regions.
