The Goa assembly has enacted a new bill aimed at stopping public nuisances and unauthorized activities at popular tourist locations across the state. Tabled by State Tourism Minister Rohan Khaunte, the Goa Tourist Places (Protection and Maintenance) Amendment Bill, 2025, seeks to enhance existing regulations under the 2001 Act.
Significantly broadening the definition of 'nuisance,' the new law stipulates heavier penalties, with fines now reaching Rs 1 lakh. The revised definition includes hazardous or polluting boat operations, unwanted pestering of tourists, and various unauthorized activities such as cooking in inappropriate areas and operating vehicles or selling services unlawfully.
The bill introduces section 10A for a biennial review of fines, permitting adjustments up to 10 percent every two years. Aimed at boosting responsible tourism, this legislation seeks to maintain a safe and welcoming environment for both visitors and locals in Goa.
