The Election Commission (EC) has made significant changes to the compensation structure for its vital booth-level officers. Announced on Saturday, the EC doubled the annual remuneration for BLOs, raising their pay from Rs 6,000 to Rs 12,000, almost eight years since the last increment.
BLOs, predominantly teachers or state government employees, manage updates to the voter list within their assigned booth, a crucial role in ensuring accurate electoral rolls. The Commission has also approved a special incentive of Rs 6,000 for BLOs engaging in the Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls, particularly focusing on Bihar initially.
Further revisions include an enhanced annual remuneration for BLO supervisors to Rs 18,000, and new honorarium packages for electoral registration officers and assistant officers, set at Rs 30,000 and Rs 25,000, respectively. The EC emphasized the importance of accurate electoral rolls as foundational to democracy, commending the hard work of these officers.
