In the midst of escalating trade tensions, Canada is striving to achieve a reduction in U.S. tariffs that have been linked to allegations of fentanyl smuggling, according to Canadian officials. This was highlighted following the American announcement of new tariffs.
U.S. President Donald Trump is expected to engage in discussions with Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney within the coming days. This dialogue potential is seen as a chance to negotiate down tariffs that are not covered under the U.S.-Mexico-Canada trade agreement and secure a mutually beneficial deal for both economies.
Dominic LeBlanc, Canada's federal cabinet minister overseeing U.S.-Canada trade, expressed positivity about recent conversations with U.S. officials. He noted that while progress is being made, a final agreement has yet to be reached. Meanwhile, Canada aims to address its alleged role in U.S. fentanyl imports, which it claims constitutes only 1% of the total.
