In a concerning revelation, an official report from Pakistan's Central Police Office has disclosed that over 2,000 policemen have fallen victim to terrorist attacks in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa over the past 25 years. This marks a drastic increase from the 236 police deaths reported between 1970 and 1999.
The surge in fatalities began post-2007, aligned with increasing militant activities, including bombings and targeted assaults against law enforcement. The highest fatalities were recorded in 2009, with 210 officers killed. Despite a temporary decline, targeted attacks have resurged, resulting in 188 police fatalities in 2023 alone.
During 'Police Martyrs' Day', Khyber Pakhtunkhwa's Chief Minister Ali Amin Gandapur acknowledged the sacrifices of these officers, announcing a financial grant for the bereaved families, underlining the gravity of the ongoing threat to police in the region.
