On Monday, Congress leaders and workers, spearheaded by the party's Delhi unit president Devender Yadav, organized a protest outside the Delhi Assembly. The demonstration called for the rehabilitation of families affected by recent demolitions of informal settlements across the city.
Timed to coincide with the first day of the Monsoon Session, the protest attracted numerous party workers holding placards and chanting slogans. Protesters claimed over 15,000 families from 3,000 JJ clusters had been displaced, some living in Delhi for decades. Yadav emphasized the need for alternative housing before any evictions and noted Congress's historical efforts to support informal settlers.
As the protestors approached the Assembly, police used water cannons to disperse them, leading to minor scuffles. Yadav was detained and taken to Sabzi Mandi police station. Yadav critiqued the BJP government for neglecting housing solutions while many units remain vacant. The Congress demanded a halt in evictions until a clear rehabilitation policy is crafted.
