The Maharashtra government has called on the central government to step in and halt Karnataka's plans to raise the Almatti dam's height. Officials warn this change could lead to severe flooding in Maharashtra's Kolhapur and Sangli districts.
A memorandum was submitted to Union Jal Shakti Minister C R Patil by Maharashtra Water Resources Minister Radhakrishna Vikhe-Patil. The document argues against increasing the Full Reservoir Level of the dam from 519.60 metres to 524.256 metres due to potential flood risks.
During a meeting with Patil, state legislators emphasized the severe floods experienced in 2019 and 2021 as evidence of the risks. Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has also formally stated opposition to the dam's height increase.
