A 22-year-old cleric has been detained in Belagavi following allegations of the rape of a minor within a mosque two years prior, officials announced on Wednesday.

The incident reportedly took place on October 5, 2023, but surfaced only after a social media post on August 5, 2025, by a right-wing activist, which also included a phone conversation recording with the victim's parents.

Authorities claim that mosque officials had allegedly intimidated the girl's father from approaching the police or going public. After the activist's post caught the attention of social media monitors, police discovered the family, who validated the incident but hesitated to file a complaint.

The Child Welfare Committee was brought into the loop, and a formal complaint was lodged under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act, leading to the cleric's arrest, police confirmed.
