An alarming shooting incident occurred at Fort Stewart in Georgia on Wednesday, where five soldiers sustained gunshot injuries. The sprawling military base, which is situated about 64 kilometers southwest of Savannah, enforced an immediate lockdown as authorities moved to contain the situation.
The Fort Stewart social media channels urged personnel in lockdown areas to stay indoors and secure windows and doors. The base, the largest Army post east of the Mississippi River, went into full lockdown, closing all entry gates to ensure safety. The shooting occurred in the area occupied by the 2nd Armoured Brigade Combat Team.
Local schools, including the three elementary schools within the base and others nearby, implemented lockdown procedures as a precaution. Georgia Governor Brian Kemp and US Representative Buddy Carter have been briefed and are closely following developments as law enforcement addresses the scene.
